There’s a myriad of art supplies out there but you need to choose the best quality that falls within your budget. Here are some tips on how you can choose the right art material for gifting purposes: For Children(6-12) If you want to gift a child, choose age-appropriate and safe supplies. Forget those huge sets of low-prices art stuff, they would impress the kids. Go for small sets of good quality materials that can last longer so they can appreciate your gesture. Crayola products are great for kids because they are reliable. Try as much as possible to avoid markers/pens young kids because they usually pull the lids and leave the pen open. Children need products like quality triangular-grip pencils or watercolor pencils which come complete with brushes. If you accompany this with an A4 high-quality drawing book, your artist kid will know that you really value his/her art endeavors. For Teens (12-18) Teens are a bit tricky to deal with because they already have their preferences. So its god to find out what they are into before you buy them a gift. You can either visit them or have a look around to see what they love or you can find out from their friends. Most teens would prefer a book on drawing Manga/Anime or fantasy characters. If your artist is a budding cartoonist, fine permanent fiber-tipped pens make a great choice. You can also consider buying them consumables like paper or ink because at times they may be short of cash to buy such items and they will really appreciate getting them from you as a gift. You can buy them a bound sketchbook or a Strathmore 400 series paper to use as a daily journal. For Creative Adults Just like teens, adults also have their preferences already. So you’ll to make some effort to find out what they usually use and maybe they are lacking at the moment. Many creative adults like experimenting with different media so you can try coming up with a combination that can impress them. A Daler-Rowney, Newton, or a Winsor Watercolor Field Sketching box can make a good combination. You can also add a luxury sketchbook to show them how you appreciate their art. If in doubt, you can check out an art magazine or a video DVD/video to help you make a choice. Gift suggestions If you can’t make a choice on your own, here's a collection of ideas that can help you out. 1. A Painting Knife This is a good alternative to a paintbrush. It offers a different experience from painting with an ordinary brush. If the artist in your life already has a painting knife, consider buying them one of the uniquely shaped painting knives from RGM, which opens up all sorts of new possibilities. 2. I liked it when you shared that it is great to make some effort to find out what the artists usually use and get something that they don't have yet. My sister just mentioned the other day that she is getting some art supplies for her friend who has always loved creating new painting during her free time. I will suggest to her getting a tote bag that contains all the art supplies that she needs.

My brother is an artist. I don't think he has a painting knife. I'll look into getting him one for his birthday next week.

You made an excellent point that it can be challenging to ensure that an artist has all the necessary art supplies. I do agree that it is best to get the basic essentials. I will definitely be very mindful of this information.
